Recently Lord Solar Steve, from Dark Future Games, published an article on Sniper Rifles and more specifically on Ratlings. Now I'm no Guard player. One the other hand Sandwyrm and Stelek have extensive experience playing Guard.
At a measly 10 points for a model, sniper rifle, infiltrate, and scout, you can not really go wrong here.
- Lord Solar SteveFor 10 points that really does seem like a bargain. Until you realise that sniper rifles are not the best choice (explained below). And you aren't likely to take advantage of the infiltrate and scout rule... poor stats and then the rifle is already 36" (although re-deploying after the enemy has deployed is a positive). Stelek does a quick review of Ratlings. And once your done with experimenting with Ratlings you can see the better Elite choices here. As for the Sniper Rifle which Lord Solar Steve covers in the second half of the article.
The most important thing to remember about Ratlings though is indeed the -sniper rifle- as it not only wounds any creature, from your normal space marine to a Wraithlord your local Chaos Daemon players Scabieathrax from Imperial Armour on a 4+ it takes their -ARMOR SAVE- on a 6 plus and can penetrate anything up to Armor 11 and glance anything Armour 12!
- Lord Solar SteveSandwyrm describes what Lord Solar Steve is talking about as the Anti-Tank Myth and the Monsterous-Creature Myth. And he does a good job in being a MythBuster in his article. There is Mathhammer involved in Sandwyrm's article. So you have been warned.
Note: there are always exceptions to such broad statements. Like this 'Ard Boyz army list by Stelek.
