So some time ago Fritz did a
post on using reserves. Two things jumped out at me. The first was that this is the sort of benchmark that tactic article posted on Bell of Lost Souls should always be. And secondly it echoed alot of stuff I had been reading on
Yes The Truth Hurts and other competitive blogs.
Above all, reserves take the punch out of the first turn, especially with the drop pod heavy armies or in your face assault armies- my solution to for the new Blood Angels. Nothing takes the wind out of those in your face armies when they have nothing to shoot and assault in that decisive first/second turn.

Of course against Deep Striking armies there are alternative tactics to holding everything in reserves. Sandwyrm, from the back 40K, illustrates an alternative tactic in this
battle report. And against Daemons who struggle against mechanised opponents, castling up is a viable options. I'll do a separate post in the future on Drop Pod heavy armies and possibly even on Daemons.
