White Dwarf 371 November 2010 - Dark Eldar

Inside this month's issue:
New Releases - As would be expected this is crammed with all the latest Dark Eldar miniatures that are from the first and second wave. There is also the new Warhammer terrain. Since my forum time is spent on B&C I never saw the rumours for these. But they do look interesting... There is also some new hobby stuff such as the Large Model Figure Case and the cutting mat.
News: Chocks Away - The new White Dwarf subscription miniature has been released... did you know you have to buy the stupid thing. Even if you already own a subscription.
News: Golden Demon Australia 2010 - Is only a few days away... of course I wont be attending.
From the Labyrinth Dimension - Andy Hall braves the lair of the designer of the Dar Eldar, Jes Goodwin, to find out all about the creation of the new miniatures. Of interest is what Jes Goodwin says at the top of page 26 in the right hand column about the eventual release of the Venom. He also alludes to more miniatures being released in one of the Round Table discussions... glad I'm not collecting Dark Eldar yet. Going to wait for the rest of the miniature range to be released.
A Dark Genesis - Phil Kelly, the author of the new Codex, sits down to talk with Adam Troke about the fall, Commorragh and the sinister agenda of the Dark Eldar.
The Dark Art - I'm assuming that it is Adam Troke that talks with Kevin Chin, the newest member of the studio's artists, about the Dark Eldar artwork.
The Lord of the Rings: Reinforcements - All the rule for using the King's Champion, Flói Stonehand, the Gundabad Blackshields and the Cave Drake in The Lord of the Rings Strategy Game.
The Defenders of Ulthuan - Adam Troke "dispenses wisdom on how to get the best from the Children of Asuryan on the battlefield". He may not be an elite member of competitive players, but at least his tactica includes some pictures.
Old War Stories - Jeremy Vetock returns with more tales of war, this time sharing some of his Warhammer hobby plans. I was actually surprised to find that there was talk of rules... and how the changes are good for game play. It sounds like the Design Studio actually intended for some of the changes, like Steadfast, to shift the game from Elite Cavalry being the bomb towards a game that encouraged balanced armies. Note: my understand of this Edition of Warhammer Fantasy and the last are purely based off interwebz arguments...
Battle Report: The Soul Harvest - We see Phil Kelly, with Dark Eldar, attack some Imperial Guard, lead by Andrew Kenrick, on the jungle world of Kato III. Can anyone guess if the new codex being featured in this issue of White Dwarf wins or losses...
Standard Bearer - Jervis talks about how to pick an army... he goes through the different things to consider when picking an army such as background, gaming and painting opportunities, ease of use and other things.
An interesting thing to note, both Jervis and Jeremy acknowledge that there are different types of gamers. Jeremy talked about how some of his out of work friends like to play simple pitched battles while others like to include all sorts of bells and whistles. He doesn't single either out as bad for the hobby, just acknowledges that there is a difference. Jervis ends his Standard Bearer article with something similar. He acknowledges that there are gamers who are interested in playing competitively... he does point out that worrying about winning games has a negative effect.
Arcane Architecture - Adam Troke seems to play a really big role in White Dwarf articles... in this one he not only looks at the detail of the new scenery pieces but also writes some rules for them.
'Eavy Metal Masterclass: Dark Eldar -  In this masterclass Anja Wettergren and Joe Tomaszewski look at how to paint glowing eyes, kabalite armour, brass detail, wyche and mandrake skin and hair as well as flayed skin. They also look at painting Dark Eldar vehicles. Overall, I found the recipe for brass and flayed skin interesting, while the rest of it doesn't particularly interest me. When I collect some Dark Eldar I will go for either go for pale skin or go for a deathly grey.
Modelling Workshop: Dark Eldar - The legend Jes Goodwin shares some tips on assembling. This is aimed more at helping those entering the hobby...
You'll also find full details of all the latest releases and news, a directory featuring all of the hobby activities in your local area.

  1. Considering that the Dark Eldar were trashed in (all? there's one of the three I don't reliably remember) their UK WD battle report appearances to date, including the Codex release report in 1998, I think it's about time they did well for themselves. I like how they admit to the rehearsal of battle reports nowadays too - I think everyone knows they're a swizz.

Does this one at least discuss the ins and outs of choices made during gameplay, rather than being all 'list building then narrative'?

  2. No ins and outs during game play. Get description of Dark Eldar weapons and what not... but that is expected in this issue of WD.

Interestingly, on the introduction page for the Battle Report it is mentioned that they decided to use a normal BRB Mission because it wouldn't show particular bias to either force... may be a useful argument for non-wacky tournament missions.
