Imperium Basilica

It has been a while since I last featured some of the terrain from the guys over at What's New Today. However, last week Dan showed off his latest piece of scenery. The below images and commentary have been taken from What's New Today with my own thoughts in purple italics...

I wanted to go for something different, something unusual and, I must admit, this colour scheme was a bit of a gamble. The orangey tone of the building was achieved using several layers of colour over a Chaos Black undercoat. The basecoat was several solid layers of Vermin Brown, followed by a drybrush of Vermin Brown and Vomit Brown in a 1:1 mix.

Community Shoutout - Golden Vinci 2012

A shoutout for an online painting competition being run by the guys over at dieVincis. Below are the details...

For 2012 we organize our first big painting competition the “Golden Vinci 2012”. This competition will start every following year. It gives four categories and in every choice there is a bronze, silver and golden Vinci to win. We think a small statue represent a successful competition more than a small voucher ore money prize.

Sculpting Ultramarine Symbol by Garfy from Tale of Painters - The tutorial may be aimed at Ultramarine players. However, it is great for illustrating the importance of planning the process behind the design your trying to sculpt. Something that Ron from FTW has also talked about in the past.

Games Day Miniature for 2012

It seems appropriate after yesterday's post on the Warhammer 40K 25th Anniversary Miniature that I should put up images of the Games Day Miniature for 2012.

He may be a Blood Angel but it would seem that the guys and gals at Games Workshop made him so that the Blood Angel imagery could easily be removed... being Finecast may be a good thing. And has anyone else noticed the trend of Games Workshop returning to some of their older imagery, such as the Space Monkey?

Warhammer 40,000 25th Anniversary Miniature Revealed

Pictures of the 25th Anniversary Warhammer 40,000 Miniature in next months White Dwarf have started to pop up on the interwebz. I am super excited...

I may not have been apart of the hobby during Rogue Trader due to not being alive and all. So this release has no nostalgic effect on me. But having something like this in my collection of unpainted miniatures would be awesome. Lets just hope that there are no issues with the molds for this Finecast miniature.

Weekly Finds #63

It has been a busy crazy week for me. I've gone to Sydney Aquarium, Australian Museum, Taronga Zoo and today was the Power House Museum to see the Harry Potter Exhibition. Also found out where I'll be working next month which has gotten me excited. Fortunately next week will be more relaxed with my partner starting full time work after 3 years at University. Helps explain why we crammed in so many places to see in one week. Unfortunately, due to the busy schedule today, wasn't able to head down to the Tin Soldier to throw some dice. However, all of my finds this week were more than enough to give me my hobby fix...

How to Paint Space Wolves by Ron from FTW - This follows on well from last weeks tutorial on painting white. The method used to paint the black works well with the grey off white. It may only be table top standard but it pushes the quality of the miniature up a notch or two.

Weekly Finds #62

The Best of December 2011 by Corvus from Corvus' Miniatures - This is a great collection of links looking at some of the latest releases, paint jobs and sources of inspiration. I've been a huge fan of Seb Archer's miniature range from Guild of Harmony ever since I stumbled across his website. The Dorothy miniature below is without a doubt my favourite big fan of steampunk. Both links to the sources of inspiration should be looked at. The pictures of the unbuilt Wonderland castle looks great as does the huge range of pictures from Industrial Decay Network... great inspiration for streampunk terrain.

White Dwarf 385 January 2012 - Vampire Counts

Inside this month's issue:
New Releases: The latest releases from the citadel forges. Or should that be grave yards?
News: All the goings on in the hobby world. This is really just some advertising for Black Library, Codex Pictures and Fantasy Flight Games.
Born of Blood: The Vampire Counts muster their armies of the dead and march to wage war on the living. Simon Grant takes a look at some of these denizens of Sylvania including background, rules and army lists.
The Dark Arts: Simon Grant examines the dark magicks of the Necromancers that plague the lands of the living with shambling hordes of the Undead.
'Eavy Metal Showcase: The 'Eavy Metal team showcase some of the awesome Vampire Counts miniatures that they've painted. Lots of eye candy but little in terms of painting advice.
War in the Border Princes: We present the background, scenario and even a battle report based on Mannfred von Carstein's evil plan.
Standard Bearer: This month Jervis talks about never winning games. Or possibly an excuse on poor rule writing.
Tactica: Necrons: Freshly awakened from his hibernation, Mat Ward shares his tactics and grand strategies for how to (re)conquer the galaxy in the name of the Necrons. Remember boys and girls, this is White Dwarf, so tactics are more like a summary of the unique rules available to Necrons.
Painting Workshop: Ghorgon: In this painting guide, Chad Mierzwa puts his monster painting skills into practice with the Ghorgon. End result is a table top standard that the average painter can achieve with the right paints.
Warhammer: Civil War: Jervis Johnson presents a brand-new set of rules for fighting civil wars, pitching brother against brother on the battlefields of the Warhammer world. What looks like an interesting expansion for Warhammer Fantasy which includes both rules and background.
Sorcerous Pacts: The dread counts of Sylvania are not the only generals to command the restless dead - when a Storm of Magic howls even mortal Wizards can summon the dead.
Games Day: It's the start of a new year and a new season of awesomely fun Games Days! We present the complete calendar of upcoming dates, as well as the new Games Day model. I may attend this years Games Day... have to wait and see if the missus is interested in going along.
Armies on Parade: Dan Harden's from What's New Today army of Haradrim.
Battlefield Terrain: A look at some of the terrain available from Games Workshop.
Painting Workshop: Mortis Engine: Steve Bowerman shows us how to paint the Mortis Engine, and offer tips for painting the legions of the Undead. A step-by-step tutorial that will produce a great looking Mortis Engine.
Hall of Fame: Kevin Chin nominates a model for the Hall of Fame.
You'll also find full details of all the latest releases and news, plus a directory featuring all of the hobby activities in your local area.
