Weekly Finds #121
Video Tutorial on Painting Neutral Skin by Corvus from Corvus' Miniatures - This is a great tutorial for an above table top standard scheme... if your after something even quicker and with a warmer tone you can take a look at Garfy's tutorials over on Tale of Painters.
Building a Better Heldrake by Kraut Scientist from Dark Future Games - I don't exactly fancy the approach taken with the new Daemon Engines. That isn't to say the miniatures aren't nice. I just prefer Forge World's Decimator and Slaughterer. The connections between the Heldrake and Hell Talon are clever. However, Kraut Scientist's simple conversions look so much nicer. Thehead maw reminds me of the Hellcannon. Much better than the actual head which looks like a hybrid dragon and dinosaur.
Death from the Skies Rules by Darog from Darog's Company - For those who don't feel compelled to pick up the first Compendium released by Games Workshop in a very, very long time.
Warrior Priest by Ricky Upjohn from What's New Today - The bronzed armour on this warrior priest is great. Ricky's use of Gehenna Gold, alongside the Warplock Bronze, has given the armour a dull gold look. A look that I think suits most Imperial miniatures. The Runefang Steel is a bit too bold for my liking.
Review: Portable Airbrushing Spray Booth by Garfy from Tale of Painters - This is something I'm missing. Here is Rev's extractor with a tumble dryer hose. This Weekly Finds post includes some other useful airbrushing links.

This month's White Dwarf Tale of Painters' Review Comparison is by Garfy... and I have to say the comparison approach should help remove the rose tinted glasses from some of the Longbeards.

Heresy & Black Legion Chatter by Aaron Dembski-Bowden from His Blog - Like any true fan of the 40K Universe I'm a die hard fan of Aaron's work. There is nothing he can do wrong. If your not then I'm afraid we can't be Imaginary Friends. However, this isn't about his Horus-Heresy novels. This is about the quote buried half way through his post. The one by Marc Gascoigne. That is what the background has always been to me. With the High Lords of Terra and the Inquisition controlling everything and anything, how can you not view things with skepticism...
Keep in mind Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 are worlds where half truths, lies, propaganda, politics, legends and myths exist. The absolute truth which is implied when you talk about “canonical background” will never be known because of this. Everything we know about these worlds is from the viewpoints of people in them which are as a result incomplete and even sometimes incorrect. The truth is mutable, debatable and lost as the victors write the history…
Here’s our standard line: Yes it’s all official, but remember that we’re reporting back from a time where stories aren’t always true, or at least 100% accurate. if it has the 40K logo on it, it exists in the 40K universe. Or it was a legend that may well have happened. Or a rumour that may or may not have any truth behind it.
Let’s put it another way: anything with a 40K logo on it is as official as any Codex… and at least as crammed full of rumours, distorted legends and half-truths.
I think the real problem for me, and I speak for no other, is that the topic as a “big question” doesn’t matter. It’s all as true as everything else, and all just as false/half-remembered/sort-of-true. The answer you are seeking is “Yes and no” or perhaps “Sometimes”. And for me, that’s the end of it.
Now, ask us some specifics, eg can Black Templars spit acid and we can answer that one, and many others. But again note that answer may well be “sometimes” or “it varies” or “depends”.
But is it all true? Yes and no. Even though some of it is plainly contradictory? Yes and no. Do we deliberately contradict, retell with differences? Yes we do. Is the newer the stuff the truer it is? Yes and no. In some cases is it true that the older stuff is the truest? Yes and no. Maybe and sometimes. Depends and it varies.
It’s a decaying universe without GPS and galaxy-wide communication, where precious facts are clung to long after they have been changed out of all recognition. Read A Canticle for Liebowitz by Walter M Miller, about monks toiling to hold onto facts in the aftermath of a nuclear war; that nails it for me.
