Weekly Finds

Sons of Horus Army Shot by John Stiening from 40K Hobby Blog - Although this army is far from complete, it is still very impressive and is a great case example of why Escalation isn't a bad thing.

Imperial Fists Step-by-Step by Arsies from Arsies Studio - Painting yellow has increasingly become easy with Games Workshop's latest release of new Citadel paints. However, achieving a high standard yellow is still complicated. This tutorial offers just one way of painting that envy inducing yellow.

Why Shooting is Even Better than in 5th Ed by Kirby from the Pinktastic Blog - I remember how assault was in 4th Edition rose-tinted glasses on. That isn't to say gun-line armies didn't stand a chance. But the game was balanced differently. Imagine how awesome those Godzilla themed Tyranid armies would have been with the latest releases...

Tutorial on Sculpting a Ruff by Ana from Garden of Hectate - I can just imagine somewhere in a hive city gangs fighting it out for a scrap of territory, all the while, hive nobles watching from the spires through the lenses of their ruff wearing Servo Skulls.

Pale Skin by Kari from Spiky Rat Pack - I love the work that the guys from Spiky Rat Pack do... so much character crammed into each of their creations. This tutorial highlights something that I've noticed of late on the interwebz and discussed a bit at my FLGS. The proper use of  washes and inks on base coats can produce just as amazing results as successive layers of wet blending. Midian's Nurgle Terminators are a great example of this.

Using Superglue by Roman from Massive Voodoo - This is so cool. Also take a look at the comments from the linked article with two great tutorials being shared by CzG.

Weekly Finds

Last Minute Golden Demon Entry by Tyler M from Mengel Miniatures - A beautiful diorama for the UK Golden Daemons. Although I like the new Space Marine Captains that have come out for Apocalpyse... I have never been much a fan of non-combat poses for gaming pieces. Some of the Captains look like they are giving pre-battle speeches or the such. However, with a simple head swap and a sword Tyler has given me some ideas.

Pre-Heresy Death Guard by Durfast Spiritwolf from the Bolter & Chainsword - Another Horus Heresy collection to add to my growing list of must watch... I normally am not a fan of the Mk II armour due to the weird legs. However, it seems perfect for Death Guard.

Chapter of the Ruined King by noctus cornix from the Bolter & Chainsword - I'm loving the background fluff for this Horus Heresy collection. But what really jumps out at me is the Raptors. The combined use of the new Raptor bodies, the old Jump Packs and World Eater helmets is brilliant.

Huge Mistake by Gotthammer from Collegia Titanica - A departure from the usual look associated with the Brass Scorpion.  It is neither brass nor red. However, this approach could be used to create a cohesive look for several different daemon engines... although, painting all those lines and circles would drive anybody insane. But then that is what happens when you meddle with warp things.

Sons of Mortarion by Midian from the Bolter & Chainsword - And another Death Guard collection to keep an eye on. Especially if they turn out anything like Midian's Maze of Minotaurs...

The Truth About Cover Saves by Matt-Shadowlord from the Pinktastic Blog - A depart from this weeks looks at traitors, rebels and all around bad guys to look at Cover Saves... although, this tutorial on painting concrete features a depraved Dark Eldar.

Weekly Finds

Step by Step Tutorial of Pedro Kantor by Raffa from Massive Voodoo - This is described as a fast tutorial... yet for the vast majority of hobbyists this would be considered professional and garner lots of jealousy. I can imagine that on a stock standard Space Marine that lacks all of the extra details, this would indeed work out to be a fast tutorial. Especially, when you consider how few colours are actually used.

Number Crunching the Troops by Anonymous Foodie from The Back 40K - A different approach to comparing the value of units on the table top. To a greater extent this article helps poke holes into the argument that mathhammer alone should win games. A must read before considering the opinions of interwebz personalities.

Eldar Wraithknight by Third Eye Nuke from Tale of Painters - Third Eye Nuke's approach to painting his wraith constructs draws some nice parallels with wraithbone, and more specifically Forge World's Wraithseer. Yet the weathering breaks it away from the traditional clean look. The colour scheme used has similarities with TEN's Tau miniatures.

Tau Codex Review: Markerlights by Abuse Puppy from the Pinktastic Blog - Can see the overview for the series here.

Weekly Finds

Tyler Mengel's Nurgle Force by Nurgling6688 from Bolter & Chainsword - I've featured Tyler's WiP of Typhus. He is now making progress of some cultists to join his Nurgle force. These cultists are a nice blend of Games Workshop Bitz, Secret Weapon Miniatures skulls and Victorian Miniatures conversion parts. I look forward to seeing this collection grow...

Leaked High Elves by Volomir from Volomir's Blog - The elven races of the Fantasy Universe are apart of my top five. However, I doubt this release will push me towards moving to that game system. Regardless, I'm sure there are Imaginary Friends who would like to see these. Plus it add's some weight to the possibility that Eldar are set for June/July... Chaos Warriors and Chaos Space Marines came out back-to-back while Chaos Daemons for both factions came out together.

Tau Talking Points by Abuse Puppy from the Pinktastic Blog - With the recent release of the new Tau Empire Codex, it seems prudent to gain some insight into their units, wargear and special rules. Know thy enemy...

Weekly Finds #121

Video Tutorial on Painting Neutral Skin by Corvus from Corvus' Miniatures - This is a great tutorial for an above table top standard scheme... if your after something even quicker and with a warmer tone you can take a look at Garfy's tutorials over on Tale of Painters.

Building a Better Heldrake by Kraut Scientist from Dark Future Games - I don't exactly fancy the approach taken with the new Daemon Engines. That isn't to say the miniatures aren't nice. I just prefer Forge World's Decimator and Slaughterer. The connections between the Heldrake and Hell Talon are clever. However, Kraut Scientist's simple conversions look so much nicer. The head maw reminds me of the Hellcannon. Much better than the actual head which looks like a hybrid dragon and dinosaur.

Death from the Skies Rules by Darog from Darog's Company - For those who don't feel compelled to pick up the first Compendium released by Games Workshop in a very, very long time.

Warrior Priest by Ricky Upjohn from What's New Today - The bronzed armour on this warrior priest is great. Ricky's use of Gehenna Gold, alongside the Warplock Bronze, has given the armour a dull gold look. A look that I think suits most Imperial miniatures. The Runefang Steel is a bit too bold for my liking.

Review: Portable Airbrushing Spray Booth by Garfy from Tale of Painters - This is something I'm missing. Here is Rev's extractor with a tumble dryer hose. This Weekly Finds post includes some other useful airbrushing links.

Weekly Finds #97

WIP: High Elf Dragon Lord by Volomir from Volormir's Blog - This is part 5 of another highly detailed series by Volomir following on from his Sword Masters and Sea Guards. It is interesting to see how light the green stuff actually is... as well as seeing the process of slowly building up the detail.

Building Deimos Pattern Predator Turret by Ron from FTW - A very cheap scratch built turret with some clever use of a ping pong ball. With some smoother seams this would look even more realistic.

Tutorial: How to Pain Dark Angels by Stahly from Tale of Painters - With the release of Dark Vengeance we are going to see a lot of green marines on table tops. So this tutorial seems highly appropriate for this Weekly Finds.

Review: Complete Guide to Photographing Miniatures by Raffa from Massive Voodoo - I'm far from needing a DVD Guide like this... I wouldn't even call myself an amateur photographer. Just one of those guys who uses iPhone to take pictures. However, I can see others such as my future self finding this extremely helpful.

High Contrast Effect for Metal Power Weapons by Ron from FTW - There are probably dozens of ways to creating the illusion of power weapons. Some involve the use of air brushes while others aim to create lighting to varying degrees. But this is probably one of the most simple, yet effective method I've seen. Something for table top standard miniatures.

Tutorial: How to Paint the Chaos Hellbrute by Garfy from Tale of Painters - It is looking more pink compared to the 'Eavy Metal version. However, I still like what Garfy has produced. Be great for all those pleasure cults.

Warhammer 40K Frequently Asked Questions from Games Workshop - An extensive update including a much needed Frequently Asked Questions for the rule book itself. Two of the rulings would have directly impacted the game I played last night. With one of them having a huge difference in regards to a C'Tan charging through terrain into some Terminators... the other resulting in much cries of angst towards Games Workshop by some Black Templar players.

Weekly Finds #93

I've got the house to myself today and have managed not to spend half of it sleeping... just a quarter of it. Which means I've had time to build miniatures and explore the interwebz.

In the Name of the Inquisition... by Dan Harden from What's New Today - Grey Knights and allied cannon fodder Imperial Guard by Koen Cambre. The heavy weathering on the Guard contrasts nicely with the Grey Knights. However, it is refreshing to see some Grey Knights that aren't crisp and clean with Koen adding in some minor weathering. The weathering along with the bases helps tie the two forces in together far more effectively than the colour palette.

Wreck Age Table Remake (3) by Brian from A Gentleman's One - I'm sure the interwebz is familiar with Brian's terrain making skills. He is the mastermind behind The Heroes of Armageddon display table and the Killzone tables. If you are looking for inspiration for scenery his blog is probably one of the first places I'd direct you to... plus it is free unlike the Forge World team.

How to Make Plasticard Orc Shields by Gareth from Tale of Painters - A simple tutorial that produces some unique results. As can be seen on Gareth's Big Un Mob. Can also use this tutorial to produce some Black Orc styled shields.

It's Flicker Thursday by Dan Harden from What's New Today - An amazing Contemptor Dreadnought by Patrick Schimak. Can see more of Patrick's amazing collection on the Games Workshop Flickr page.

40k Metrics: Building Better Devastator by Nikephoros from Bringer of Victory - I'm a big fan of Nikephoro's metric posts. This one particularly caught my attention as I'm a big Iron Warriors fan. And for me Havocs fit into the imagery of Iron Warriors just as much as tanks with big guns. So it was a pleasant surprise to find out that Havocs carrying Autocannons are kings at killing light mech.

Weekly Finds #69

Despite my brain being completely fried from work, I've managed to amass a large collection of twelve articles this week. They range from tutorials on sculpting all the way to the correct movement of vehicles. This week also sees the release of the much awaited expansion for both 'Nids and Space Wolves. It looks like I may be collecting a non-mechanised Space Wolf army... time will tell of course.

Servo Skull Collector by Jakob Rune Nielsen from miniaTEXTures - This miniature oozes with individuality. I can just imagine the servo skull collector being right at home in a John Blanche painting. It even has a small shield on his should like many of Blanche's own miniatures.

Weekly Finds #66

Going Made On Icicles by Roman from Massive Voodoo - A chance to see Roman using his tutorial on making icicles. The below picture as well as the WiP pictures in the link give an idea on how using this tedious technique can produce some great results. Especially if you used some of Secret Weapon Miniatures' Crushed Glass on the base to enhance the winter feel.

Weekly Finds #57

What I've learned about varnish and powders by Ron from FTW - I've been following Ron's series of articles on using weathering powders as can be seen here and here. It is interesting to see Ron's process in experimenting with varnish, hair spray and alcohol. That sentence could easily be taken the wrong way out of context. It was a good idea of Ron to ask Mister Justin to share his own thoughts and give a video tutorial... I was wondering how long it would take for Mister Justin to get involved. As I pointed out here he is an advocate on the use of varnish and he provides a wealth of options on his webstore when it comes to weathering pigments. Check out the new release of tank traps at a dollar each and don't forget the sack of skulls.

Weekly Finds #48

Step by Step: Hunter or Hunted by Raffa from Massive Voodoo - This is possibly the greatest tutorial of them all. It is not only done by Slayer Sword winner Raffa, but is a tutorial on the diorama that won him the sword. Seeing how the project developed with the techniques and tricks really makes me want to build some terrain and get some paint onto miniatures.

Weekly Finds #46

University still has my life upside down and holding my hobby prisoner. So won't be heading to the Tin Soldier today. And I still haven't had the opportunity to touch my miniatures. But I have collected some articles for this week...

How to do basic zenithal highlighting by Ron from FTW - A great look at some of the theory behind this process. For those curious Grey Death, from TPC, also looks at basic zenithal highlighting. He focuses on using an airbrush to lay down the foundations. The black looks fantastic on his Terminators. Roman, from Massive Voodoo, also has a tutorial on the topic. And here is a tutorial that looks at priming, which shows how to achieve the effect pictures below...

Weekly Finds #26

Friday Quick Tip: Old School Cactus by Grey Death from The Painting Corps - Also take a look at this WiP of Grey Death's Proetus for his Son's of Medusa. Looks absolutely stunning and will be using him as a source of inspiration when I get around to painting my own Terminators... though obviously with black instead of the vibrant green.

Weekly Finds #25

It is almost Easter, and I've already begun to enjoy the delicious taste of Bakers Delight hot cross buns. Also on clinical placement at the moment which is cutting into my hobby time. But I'm still going to play some games tonight...

Stupid Human Tricks (Part 1) by Danny Internets from Bald & Screaming - Danny has been missing in action for awhile now... too long to be honest. But he has returned to us with an offering. Much like in this article, he is aiming to educate players of all levels of skill. The next post in the series should be good...

Weekly Finds #20

Seems to have been a slow week when it comes to hobby content... I suspect it is because everybody is excited about the upcoming Grey Knights. Regardless of this, here are the articles, posts and whatevers from the past week...

Who Really Benefits From Fell No Pain? By Sandwyrm from the back 40k - This is a post dedicated to mathhammer or law of averages as the guys and gals at GW call it. As the title suggest it is about Fell No Pain, and attempts to show that it isn't that big of an advantage for Grey Knight Terminators. Which is true when compared to Dark Eldar. However, with that said, the comment by Chaosheade illustrates that it is still a good thing even if only a small one.

Secret Weapon Washes For Sale by LBursley from Awesome Paint Job - I'm not sure how many are aware of this, but some time ago Les Bursley provided a range of washes. However, due to some reasons or other he had to stop producing them and instead wrote up a tutorial on how to be a mad scientist. Can find it here. And now it appears that they have returned with an even wider range of washes. These will be a great supplement, or even replacement, to Games Workshops range.

Ashdown's Black Templars by Ashdown from The Bolter & Chainsword - The vehicles in this thread are a great source of inspiration. The weathering that Ashdown has achieved on his Venerable Dreadnought is stunning. I'm looking forward to seeing further progress on these miniatures.

How To: Painting Dark Eldar Mandrakes by RealGenius from The Painting Corps - A follow on from last weeks post on preparing Mandrakes. These guys look completely and utterly different to the 'Eavy Metal version. The orange, purple and green work well in creating a unique negative Dark Eldar.

Hobby: Strictly Average Top Tips, Too! by Brent from Bell of Lost Souls - We love you Brent! 'Nuff said. I've got to get myself a wet palette. Find out tomorrow if Eckersley stocks them.

Brent is my online super hero... he hasn't fallen into the trap of categorising other interwebz users. Rather he does something that I can't figure out how to describe since it is mid-night and I've gotta get up in 6 hours for a long, boring day at University. Regardless, we love you Brent!

Weekly Finds #19

Without even realising another week has come and gone. Feels like I spend most of my week on buses and trains travelling to and from work or uni summarising my looney week...

Sculpting scroll work and other elements by Ron from Black Dot Barrel Studios - This is without a doubt one of the best tutorials put up by Ron... it takes the words on dozens of websites and shows how to implement it.  Makes the whole concept less challenging. Even with the table top standards it will help add character to models and units.

Mastering the assault: Part 1 - Multiple Assaults by Wildeyedjester from The Hogs of War - This post looks at the importance of multiple assaults as well as certain things to consider. Such as who to assault and, possibly even more importantly, who to attack. If you want to know how to pull off a multiple assault then look below at Kirby's Back to Basic post...

Back to Basics: Multiple Assaults... by Kirby from The Pinktastic Blog - Following on from the article above which illustrates the benefits of multi-assaults, this article goes into some depth on how to pull off a multiple assault. And at the same time illustrates how to prevent them. An A++ tutorial by Kirby that includes pictures to illustrate this confusing process.

Tutorial - How to build a flag by Roman from Massive Voodoo - The use of baking paper is brilliant. Could use this tutorial for other things like long purity seals or even with Black Templar tabards.

Jumper/ BA DoA Deployment 101 by Kirby from The Pinktastic Blog - The emphasis I'm getting from the blog-o-sphere when it comes to DoA armies is the need for missile launchers, Vanguard Veterans remember the importance of multiple assaults and that deployment will make or break the army... sometimes it is best to deploy everything on the board, while other times reserving some or all of the army is better.

4th Edition Codices and Bottleneck Builds by Nikephoros from Bringer of Victory - Although this post isn't a tutorial or about tactics it explores a topic that is relevant not only to Black Templars, but every codex...  Opportunity Costs and the implications it has on list building. In the 4th Edition Codices the issue is more apparent as there is no way to play around with FOC. However, in 5th Edition there is more flexibility.

Cleaning Your Files by Dave G from N++ - It is posts like this that hurt my bank balance. They make me realize I am missing something. For example, back when Massive Voodoo did the competition on paint station set ups, I realised just how badly I needed new lamps. And then the post by Grey Death on bulbs really reinforced the need for natural white bulbs. This post by Dave will have the same effect. I will now end up looking for rust erasers and a metal brush ... tooth brush isn't that good at cleaning files.
