Using Foamcore: Part 1 by Universal Head from The Esoteric Order of Games - I stumbled across this amazing website while looking for a way to store my Space Hulk. I've settled on the Battlefoam Tray insert. However, there is soooo much awesome contained in this website and associated forum. I'll have to get myself set up to create some foamcore inserts for my growing collection of board games.

Imperial Fist Captain by Luther from The Mighty Brush - I was googling for individuals that have used Vallejo Flat Yellow for their Imperial Fists when I found this miniature. The technique is different to my own. But it gives me some ideas for weathering.

However, achieving a high standard yellow is still complicated. This tutorial offers just one way of painting that envy inducing yellow.

Why Shooting is Even Better than in 5th Ed by Kirby from the Pinktastic Blog - I remember how assault was in 4th Edition rose-tinted glasses on. That isn't to say gun-line armies didn't stand a chance. But the game was balanced differently. Imagine how awesome those Godzilla themed Tyranid armies would have been with the latest releases...

Pale Skin by Kari from Spiky Rat Pack - I love the work that the guys from Spiky Rat Pack do... so much character crammed into each of their creations. This tutorial highlights something that I've noticed of late on the interwebz and discussed a bit at my FLGS. The proper use of  washes and inks on base coats can produce just as amazing results as successive layers of wet blending. Midian's Nurgle Terminators are a great example of this.

Imperial Fists Dreadnoughts by gnoks from Reaktor.Miniatures - I normally find inspiration for my Imperial Fists on the Bolter & Chainsword as they have some amazing painters with some beautifully weathered 1st, 3rd and 5th Company Imperial Fists. Plus there is the growing 30K Era collectors. But I saw this Dreadnought in a news feed on House of Paincakes... I'm glad I did because these guys look great. The yellow isn't exactly too my liking. But the weather is just right and a great source of reference. It also inspired this weeks focus on weathering.

Sponge Weathering Video by Grey Death from The Painting Corps - An old tutorial that I feared was lost to the Warp. However, a quick Google search revealed that TPC was still active... but far from alive like it was in it's golden days. Grey Death's Sons of Medusa are some of my all time favourite due to the vibrant green he has created along with the use of weathering. Definitely worth a look if you've never seen the collection.

Demetrius Katafalque's Company by Apologist from the Bolter & Chainsword - I've shown Apologist's True Scale Imperial Fist in the past. But you can't show off weathering without including this beautiful miniature.

Forge World Space Marine by Meph from Cool Mini or Not - I came across this while searching Google Images. An amazing find that isn't limited to just the Forge World Space Marine. There is also a Blood Angel Terminator built to the non-table top large HUGE scale.

Space Marine Librarian by Damn13n from the Bolter & Chainsword - This miniature seemed to get some negative reactions when pictures first hit the interwebz about a month ago. I'll be honest and say I didn't understand the dislike. The miniature shows why Games Workshop is one of the leading miniature makers. And despite the unusual choice of colour, this miniature is turning out beautifully. I look forward to seeing it finished.

How to Paint Imperial Fist by Garfy from Tale of Painters - The use of red for shading gives this yellow a unique warmth... not something I'd want to repeat on my own Imperial Fists. But for 3rd Company this really works.

The Minotaurs & an Ultramarine by Lorenzen from the Bolter & Chainsword - I'm not a fan of the Centurion miniatures. I don't dislike them as much as the Dreadknight. However, when I first saw the pictures I was convinced they would never be included in my collection. Seeing them in person at the FLGS reinforced that view. However, Lorenzen's simple alterations has given me hope... just need to see how they would look with the chest mounted weapons removed I suspect it would take a lot of work.

Miniature Photography by Phil from Massive Voodoo - I'm likely to pick up a decent quality camera next year for the honeymoon... so this brief guide is a good starting point as an introduction.

Chapter Colours: Ivory

Chapter Symbol: The Stigmartyr is the emblem that the Chapter adopted as its own. A gauntleted fist clenching the length of a thunderbolt-shaped scar.

Reference: The Exoriators are attrition fighters. Their reputation is for fearsome feats of stamina and attrition. They stand their ground and fight, no matter the odds.

Reference: The Codex Astartes records the Excoriators as created from the ranks of the Imperial Fists post-Heresy, during the dark days of the Second Founding. This in recognition of their stalwart defence of the Imperial Palace during the Siege of Terra.

Reference: Excoriators are listed in the Mythos Angelica Mortis as one of the Astartes Praeses, those Space Marine Chapters charged with the solemn duty of guarding the Eye of Terror and the vulnerable regions of Imperial space bordering.

Reference: Dorn himself entrusted the Excoriators with the Chapter's Sacred Standard over ten thousand years ago. It displays the Second Founding’s decree and is threaded with the honours of every battle fought in their long, bloody history. It carries the distinctia of the Astartes Praeses and their service in garrisoning the Ocularis Terribus. It also bears the Stigmartyr.

Reference: The Darkness is a genetic deficiency. When the Darkness takes an Excoriator it might appear as wretched palsy: the slackness of the jaw, the tremor of the limb, the blankness of the eye. But those who survive it report the experience as a living nightmare, a sleeping wakefulness in which they relive the bottomless woe of Dorn’s most trying time – the grievous loss of the Emperor. It is both a genetic blessing and a curse.

Reference: Chapter Master Demetrius Katafalque favoured Rogal Dorn's practice of flagellation as a form of martial communion and as purification of the soul [p 87]. Excoriators purge Rogal Dorn's weakness and their own through the Rites of Castigation and the Wearing of Dorn’s Mantle [p 63].

Reference: The Feast of Blades commemorates Rogal Dorn's decision to break up his Legion as the Codex Astartes instructed. Dorn chose the Iron Warriors fortress known as the Eternal Fortress [Iron Cage] on Sebastus IV as the instrument upon which to break his Legion and remake it a multitude of Chapters.

Reference: Tradition dictates the Feasts of Blades are centennial – at least centennial. It is the right of the reigning Chapter to call a Feast before its time.

Reference: Rogal Dorn broke the blade he’d used on Horus’s barge, after it had failed to protect his Emperor. His second sword, the “Sword of Sebastus” or the Dornsblade, emerged with the primarch from the Iron Cage. It is one of Dorn's Sons most revered artefacts. There is time for one more Weekly Finds post for the year...

Conquer the Universe by The Damned Artificer from Bolter & Chainsword - We revisit these amazing Imperial Fists. Since we last saw them The Damned Artificer has completed his stunning Rogal Dorn conversion and has added some paint. To me this is what Dorn should look like. I'm also jealous of the latest armoured addition in the form of the Typhon Siege Tank. I participially like the unique approach to adding lightening bolts...

Making Leather Loincloth by Raffa from Massive Voodoo - A useful tutorial for Fantasy players... but would also work for Orks and Chaos Space Marines. If the rumoured Imperial Guard plastics are true this tutorial may even be used to add some flavour to Feudal/Medieval Regiments. Can get texture pattern fur plates over on Masquerade Miniatures.

Painting Yellow by Les Bursley from Awesome Paint Jobs - Another video tutorial by Les. This time a quick approach to painting table top standard yellow. No easy feat when you consider how much hobbyists bemoan the colour yellow. With some extra effort may be able to produce a crisper result by blending from the base colour up to white. There is also this video tutorial by Les for painting red using the same approach. The Badger Paint Range can be found here with some candy colours in the Imagine Air range. I'm not sure if this is the same range Les uses...

Showcase: Empire Dandy by Rev from Tale of Painters - After last week, the guys over on Tale of Painters have managed to produce yet another stunning red cloak. The contrast on this isn't as extreme. However, I suspect the result would be much easier to replicate as it uses washes, instead of blending.

This week has a focus on the Legiones Astartes. Which isn't a great surprise with the Horus Heresy source book being released. I'm still patiently waiting for mine...

New Lord Plaguebone by Morback from Le Blog de Kouzes - This is one hell of a detailed conversion. It has taken me several attempts to work out how the helmet was made... it's a normal Space Marine helmet but from the back. The manreaper looks ridiculously complex with all of the plasticard bits. Hate to think how time consuming it was to build. A stunning centre piece for bind blowing warband...

Creating Metal Effects with Washes by Ron from FTW - Not strictly about the Legiones Astartes. But the content can easily be applied to any army. Another example of using washes on metal can be seen here... shows how coloured washes can have a striking effect and compliment the rest of the palette.

Lamenters Update by Dave Taylor from Dave Taylor Miniatures - The detail to this kit bash is stunning. Both the combi-melta and the left hand involve some intricate detailing. Looking forward to seeing this miniature painted up in Dave Taylor's striking yellow and black scheme.

Ultramarines Sternguard Step-by-step by Arsies from Arsies Studio - This tutorial was including in Volomir's  monthly feature Do Not Miss. I'm not much of a fan of non-metallic metal on power armour. However, I am a fan of this example of non-metallic metal by Arsies.

Imperial Fists Terminators by Bully Boy from Dakka Dakka - Despite having boxes full of miniatures to build I'm always looking for ideas on how to convert miniatures. These terminators with their Maximus styled torsos are just one example. My interest in this relates closely with this Terminator torso by Brother Chaplain Kage. Another great Imperial Fists Terminator conversion is this one by Ice Angel.

Sons of Horus by Sheep from Bolter & Chainsword - Possibly the best Sons of Horus I've seen... most look plain in comparison. However, the conversion and painting are both inspirational. The Sergeant pictured below and this Contemptor Dreadnought are my two favourite elements from this project so far. I'll be keeping an eye on Sheep's work...

Conquer the Universe by The Damned Artificer from Bolter & Chainsword - I'm jealous of this Imperial Fist collection. It's full of unique conversions with bits from all over the place. He even has an old school Land Speeder conversion with a run down of the bits here.

Maximus Armour by Gawain Veteris from Bolter & Chainsword - This tutorial may be of interest to some of my imaginary friends. I know the work on the knee pads interest me. Keep an eye out for further tutorials by Gawain... they look to be promising.

Weekly Finds #99

The interwebz is buzzing with rumours on the upcoming Chaos Space Marine release... after Dark Vengeance and the awesomeness that is Sixth Edition I can feel the excitement building. There were many that viewed Games Workshop inclusion of two power armed factions in the same box set as flawed. I can start to see their scheme trap behind it. Many players already have Loyalist Astartes... but between the awesome content of the box set and all of the new releases, I find it hard to imagine that there wont be a huge influx in Traitor Astartes especially with the allies rule.

Demetrius Katafalque's Company, Imperial Fists by Apologist from Bolter & Chainsword - Big fan of Apologist's true scale miniatures. Doubly true for this amazing looking Imperial Fist. The tutorial on how to paint the well weathered yellow can be found in this post. I'm curious as to how easy it would be to combine Tyler Mengel's method of painting yellow with this... may produce a quick, weathered yellow. Or it might be a little too bright... also learnt a new word in the form of trompe l'oeil.

Leaked Chaos Space Marine Pictures by Loken from Apocalypse 40K - I got my White Dwarf today. So I've seen these pictures in the flesh. Being able to see multiple pictures of these miniatures has helped cement some of my feelings. I like the Aspiring Champion and the Finecast Characters. I'm not a fan of the daemon engines. They just fall flat when compared to what Forge World has been offering. Although the Heldrake and Maulerfiend are still nice. Pre-release details on kits can be found here. A lot of the info and images have been compiled over on Faeit 212.

Leaked Chaos Space Marine Rules by Old School Terminator from Dark Future Games - Can get some ideas on what the new Codex offers by looking at the White Dwarf. Specifically the battle report... I suspect the Warsmith will be a popular addition with his ability to repair vehicles and hopefully daemon engines.

How to Paint The Flawless Host by Ron from FTW - With Sonic Weapons ignoring Cover Saves there will be a fair few Noise Marine armies... so this tutorial is great. It has some similarities to Tyler Mengel's tutorial on painting yellow. Using a light base coat and applying glazes to add the colour. Ron's suggestion on using reds to add depth is something I'd like to try. Note that Ron is actually talking about glazing...

Tyranid Red Terror Conversion by Garfy from Tale of Painters - I'm a big fan of Garfy's Tyranid Hive. This Red Terror conversion is no different. I like how his scheme has changed over time as his skills have developed... sort of like how Nids adapt to their surroundings.

Imperial Fists with New Citadel Paints by Tyler M. from Mengel Miniatures - Following on from last weeks traitor guardsman is this Imperial Fist with the new Citadel Paints. It is hard to imagine that yellow was once a colour left for the experts... of course the glaze method comes nothing close to the sort of results that DV8 and others have produced.

Painting Bone by Subtle Discord from Legion Rising - Subtle Discord has one hell of a Chaos Army. His army is full of individuality from the conversions to the paint job to the plasticard work on all his vehicles. The level of detail into painting the bone shows just how much effort gets put into creating this work of art.
